“When a patrol in which Private First Class Oakes was an assistant squad leader was fired upon from concealed enemy positions, he voluntarily rushed into an open clearing to attempt a rescue of his squad leader, who had been struck by the initial bursts of Japanese fire. Later, after reorganizing his squad, he carried on the attack until he was fatally wounded.”
