Contests and Scholarships

As part of the Virginia War Memorial’s mission to “Honor our Veterans, Preserve our History, Educate our Youth, and Inspire Patriotism in All,” we offer several contest and scholarship opportunities each year. Please see this year’s contests and scholarships below:

Veterans Day Essay Contest

The Virginia War Memorial’s Veterans Day Essay Contest is held annually, and is open to all Virginia Middle and High School students. Prompts are announced Memorial Day weekend, and submissions are due in early October. Each year, winners and their teachers are given a cash prize, and winning students are invited to read their submissions out loud at the Commonwealth’s Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11.

We are no longer accepting entries for the 2019 Veterans Day Essay Contest. Check back in May 2020 to find out next year’s prompt!

Marocchi Memorial Scholarship

The Marocchi Memorial Scholarship is offered each year to two graduating high school seniors in Virginia, who intend to attend a Virginian college or university and participate in that school’s ROTC program (any branch). For more details and to apply, visit the Scholarship page
