Contests and Scholarships
As part of the Virginia War Memorial’s mission to “Honor our Veterans, Preserve our History, Educate our Youth, and Inspire Patriotism in All,” we offer several contest and scholarship opportunities each year. Please see this year’s contests and scholarships below:
We will be accepting poetry from Virginian students of all ages (K-12) whose parent or parents are serving or have served in the military. Submissions will be highlighted on the Virginia War Memorial’s website for the entire month of April, designated the Month of the Military Child in the United States.
The 2021 Armed Forces Day Art Contest is open to all Virginia students K-12, and asks students to consider the concept of “home” for the men and women who have served, and those who are serving today. All appropriate entries will be added to a digital gallery starting on Armed Forces Day (May 20, 2021), so submit your work and be part of something great! Entries accepted through May 18, 2021.
The Virginia War Memorial’s Veterans Day Essay Contest is held annually, and is open to all Virginia Middle and High School students. Each year, winners and their teachers are given a prize, and winning students are invited to read their submissions out loud at the Commonwealth’s Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11.
The 2020 essay prompt asked students to write about a World War II veteran who inspires them.
The Marocchi Memorial Scholarship is offered each year to two graduating high school seniors in Virginia, who intend to attend a Virginian college or university and participate in that school’s ROTC program (any branch). For more details and to apply, visit the Scholarship page
