Private Gilmore served with K Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He left his Cumberland Mountain home when he was 16 to join the Army to help his destitute family. The Army sent him home when they discovered his age, so, he changed his name to ‘Knots’ and re-enlisted. He was killed while trying to throw an enemy grenade away from two of his fellow soldiers.
