Herman grew up in a family with 9 children and when he and his brothers helped their father on a farm. Herman got married and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for five years then he moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and worked in a brickyard. He enlisted at Fort Meade, Maryland.
Pvt Robertson was killed in action near Setterich, Germany, and he buried in McElwee Chapel Cemetery, Rockbridge Baths, Virginia.
