Corporal Corns served with Battery C, 16th Artillery, 5th Battalion. In March 1967, he was wounded in his thigh by fragments of exploding hostile mortar shells but returned to active duty a few months later. On June 19, 1967, his base camp was attacked by enemy mortars and he was killed by multiple fragment wounds. In September 1967, he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star (Valor); the citation said that, with disregard for his own safety, he ran across a field during an attack to help other soldiers who were trapped in a tent.
