British Brigadier General Benedict Arnold captures Richmond, Virginia. Governor Thomas Jefferson had heard of Arnold’s rapid troop movement and moved all arms and military supplies out of the capital city to Westham, Virginia, but Arnold was too quick. The governor’s cries for help fell on deaf ears, for only 200 militiamen responded to protect Richmond.
