Staff Sergeant served with the 373rd Bombardment Squadron, 308th Bombardment Group, 14th Air Force as a ball turret gunner on B24D # 42-40786 nicknamed “Mohawk.” The plane took off with 4 other B24s from Yangkai Airfield, China on a bombing mission over HaiPhong, French Indochina (Vietnam). The planes were intercepted by 50 Japanese Zeros and the “Mohawk” was shot down and crashed near Hai Phong. Five crew members were killed and 5 were taken as prisoners of war a few days later.
