Fireman First Class Amory served aboard the USS Edsall (DD-219) when it came under attack on Feb 27, 1942 with two sister ships near Java. One of the ships was sunk and the Edsall rescued 177 survivors. On February 28th, they rendezvoused with a fuel replenishment ship near Christmas Island, 250 miles from Tjilatjap, West Java, and came under attack. The Edsall headed out to sea and was never seen again.  After the war, a tribunal in Java found discovered that the Edsall had been attacked by the Japanese on March 1st and sunk. Eight survivors from the Edsall had been picked up and three dozen prisoners of war were were dropped off on Celebes Island, Indonesia, as prisoners of war on March 11, 1942 where they were executed on March 24, 1942. F1c Amory and four others were buried in a mass grave. In 1949, the bodies were repatriated to the United States and re-interred  in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
