Known as Spence, SGT Spencer served as an infantryman in A Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. He was killed while on guard duty on a bridge on Highway QL-1, about 9 kilometers northwest of Duc Pho, when the area came under attack by hostile forces. He earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star (Valor), Bronze Star (Merit), National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign Medals.
