Prior to the successful test of the atomic bomb, the United States prepared for “Operation Olympic,” the first phase of a planned invasion and potential occupation of the Japanese mainland. Operation Olympic was the code-name for a planned landing in Kyushu – the furthest main island in the south of Japan.
