Meet the Veteran Artist: A Discussion with Diana de Avila

Diana de Avila is a U.S. Army Disabled Veteran (Combat Military Police) and digital contemporary artist who discovered art ability in 2017 after a relapse from Multiple Sclerosis an worsening traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident in 1984. the relapse immediately affected her vision and cognition and rewired something in her brain that invoked artistic ability.

In an interview with Virginia War Memorial Director, Dr. Clay Mountcastle, de Avila will share her journey to become an artist and how she creates her captivating images. Her style is “consistently, inconsistent,” with a modern vibe and ripe with technical complexity. De Avila is a former engineer and also a former school psychologist. Her brain tends to process information very literally and quantitatively. This can be seen through her artwork.

Diana’s work is displayed at the Virginia War Memorial’s Veterans’ Art Gallery. Some pieces will be available for purchase, in person or in our online shop.
