Join us at the Virginia War Memorial for a FREE family-friendly day of fun and patriotism.
Hill of Heroes Day at the Memorial
On Saturday, June 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we invite you to join “Hill of Heroes Day,” a free open-house style event for children and lifelong learners to celebrate the “Hill of Heroes” Flag Installation on the Memorial grounds.
Enjoy free entry to the museum and exhibits, the Used Military Book Sale, hands-on historical exhibits and crafts, caricatures, Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles, and demonstrations from Ft. Gregg-Adam’s K9 Military Working Dogs Unit.
Take a kid-friendly scavenger hunt through the new D+80 exhibition and write letters to active-duty service personnel.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase, including Kona Ice.
Nutzy and Nutasha of Richmond’s Flying Squirrels, will be on-site from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. giving away tickets to Military Appreciation Night (on July 27) at the Diamond to the first 100 guests.
This year, the VWMF is thrilled to be partnering with the Library of Virginia to offer our first annual transcribe-a-thon, to catalog the death records of Virginians who were killed in World War II. Guests can discover how to transcribe historical documents about Virginia’s veterans easier to find and use for years to come.
CELEBRATION:
- Family Bonding: Spend quality time with your loved ones while exploring the Memorial’s grounds.
- Outside, view the flag display and the newly updated public green space featuring plants native to Virginia.
- Inside, we have a scavenger hunt through the new D+80 Exhibition and artwork on display by Marine Combat Artist Kris Battles
- Flying Squirrels “Funn”: Nutzy and Nutasha will be on-site from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. giving away tickets to “Military Appreciation Night” at the Diamond (on July 27) to our first 100 guests.
- Transcribe-a-Thon: This year, we are partnering with our friends at the Library of Virginia to host a transcribe-a-thon event. Discover how you can help make historical documents about Virginia’s World War II veterans easier to find and use for years to come.
- Military Demonstrations: Active-Duty military personnel will be on-site from Ft. Gregg-Adams to share interactive demonstrations including K9 service dogs and MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) Vehicles
- Military Used-Book Sale: Our Memorial Store, always full of treasures, will host our annual military used-book sale. Come find some treasures and stock up on summer reads.
- Crafts Galore: Let your creativity soar as we provide a variety of patriotic crafts for all ages.
