The Hill of Heroes display has been extended through Friday, July 16.
FLAG REMOVAL MOVED TO FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2021: With weather conditions from Tropical Storm Elsa projected to arrive in Richmond on Thursday, July 8th, the removal of the Virginia War Memorial’s Hill of Heroes has been delayed until Friday, July 16.
From Friday, June 25 through Friday, July 16, the Virginia War Memorial grounds will feature the “Hill of Heroes” flag installation.
12,000 flags will be placed on the hillside along the Shrine of Memory to honor the nearly 12,000 Virginians killed in service to the country from World War II through the present day.
This year, we proudly present the display of flags as a “gift” to the city of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia. We would like to offer this moving display as a celebration of patriotism and a reminder of all those Virginians who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
We are calling for volunteers on Friday, July 16, (Rescheduled from Friday, July 9th) at 8:00 a.m. for helping to remove the flags. Appropriate safety precautions will be in place, and all needed supplies, water bottles, and flags will be provided by the Virginia War Memorial Foundation.
