Commonwealth’s Patriot Day Ceremony

Commonwealth’s Patriot Day Ceremony

Shrine of Memory: Global War on Terrorism & Beyond

The Virginia War Memorial invites the public to join us on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. for the Commonwealth’s Patriot Day Ceremony. This annual event honors the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and service members who answered our nation’s call in the years that followed.

The program will feature patriotic music by the Virginians Barbershop Chorus, remarks from distinguished speakers, and a keynote address by Rear Admiral Samuel Cox, USN (Ret.), Director of the Naval History and Heritage Command. The ceremony will also include the traditional Tolling of the Memorial Bell, the Placement of Wreaths, and the playing of “Taps” by SGT Bradley Kirtner of the 29th Infantry Division Band.

This solemn commemoration will be held in the Shrine of Memory: Global War on Terrorism and Beyond, overlooking the James River, where the names of Virginia’s heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the War on Terrorism are etched in glass.

Admission is free, and all are encouraged to attend as we gather together in remembrance and unity on this significant day.
