The 40th Anniversary of the Beirut Barracks Bombing
October 23, 2023 will be the 40th anniversary of the Beirut bombing, when 241 U.S. Military personnel were killed in the barracks bombing, including 220 Marines, 11 of whom were Virginians.
The incident was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima.
In advance of the premiere of our new documentary film, “One Week in October,” the Virginia War Memorial will host a remembrance event with a wreath laying ceremony in the Shrine of Memory at 11:00 a.m. followed by a presentation by bestselling author Jack Carr at approximately 1:00 p.m.
Carr will speak about his upcoming non-fiction book Targeted: The 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombing scheduled to be published in the Fall of 2024 following the ceremony.
