Virginia Heroes

Welcome to the Virginia War Memorial’s Virginia Heroes database. This online resource is an evolving list of those who have served, particularly Virginians who have lost their lives in service to our country.

This online “Shrine of Memory” honors all who paid the ultimate sacrifice from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism. Their records are indicated by a gold star.

Our vision is that a global audience will recognize the valor and sacrifice of Virginia military veterans in the pursuit of liberty, democracy, justice, and peace for all.

A simple marble plaque installed in the nave of a 12th-century stone Romanesque church in Ver-sur-Mer, France, is the perfect embodiment of that vision.

In recognition and appreciation for the relief and restoration efforts provided by the Garden Club of Virginia to the Normandy village of Ver-sur-Mer, the sons and husbands of Garden Club of Virginia members are memorialized for their service during World War II.

Recently, Virginia War Memorial volunteer Bill Wheeler researched each of these 30 individuals — individuals wanting to live, but willing to die for the cause of liberty. Their stories, and photographs, when available, are now on here online and in a book recently published by the Virginia War Memorial Foundation.

THE VER-SUR-MER BOOK

A renovation of this online Shrine is scheduled to begin in 2023. Staffers and volunteers at the War Memorial are currently working to update information for this database, so it is more easily searchable and provides context for every name. As we research the names and personal histories of Virginia’s fallen we will continue to add information to this database so that their stories may never be forgotten.

Should you wish to share information about a Virginia veteran, particularly one whose name is on the Shrine of Memory, please use the Veteran Updates Form and submit to the Memorial for inclusion.
