Student Art Gallery and Contest
Help us create a STUDENT art gallery to cELEBRATE Armed Forces Day!
The Virginia War Memorial is calling on K-12 students across Virginia to help create a digital art gallery for this year’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 15. In honor of Armed Forces Day and the Virginia War Memorial’s “Salute to Service” Livestream series, we are asking students to create their own Salute to Service.
Virginia students (K-12) are invited to submit works of art to a digital gallery for Armed Forces Day 2021. The public will be encouraged to vote on their favorite works, and the students who receive the most votes in each age category will have their works highlighted as part of the gallery. Read further for details about the gallery’s theme and submission process.
The theme for this gallery is Salute to Service. Students should consider what it means to serve, and how they can honor service. Artwork can focus on individual branches of service, individuals, or actions. We encourage students to be creative with their entries! Consider all types of people, or even animals, that serve our country in various ways. Students may use the Virginia War Memorial’s “Salute to Service” series for inspiration, or may look to their own families, communities, or historical events for examples of service.
Entries may be submitted through the Virginia War Memorial’s website until Friday, May 14. Entries may be two or three-dimensional, and there are no size or medium requirements as long as the student is able to submit a clear photograph to be part of the digital gallery. Submissions should be in JPG, PNG, or PDF format and may be submitted at vawarmemorial.org/learn/artgallery. Each student should only submit one entry.
All appropriate works (as determined by Memorial staff) will be posted in a digital gallery on the Virginia War Memorial’s website beginning on Armed Forces Day, May 15. Voting will be open to the public from May 15 – May 29, and the highest vote-getter from each age category (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) will be announced on Memorial Day. Winners will receive a $50 Visa gift card courtesy of the Virginia War Memorial Foundation.
Submit your entries below. Contact Morgan Guyer, Assistant Director of Education at email@example.com with questions.
