CAPTAIN LARRY MEIER, U.S. ARMY
Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Larry graduated from Virginia Tech in 1967. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the field artillery. He was detailed to the Defense Language Institute for proficiency in Dutch and assigned to the Netherlands, where he supported Dutch Army units with the use and protection of U.S. nuclear warheads. He was then assigned to Vietnam with the 5th Infantry (Mechanized) along the DMZ in Quang Tri Province, where he served as Executive Officer of a 155mm self-propelled howitzer battery. The battery was part of the incursion into Laos during Operation Lam Son 719. Upon promotion to captain, Larry was detailed to the battalion S3 (Operations), flying aerial reconnaissance missions. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Palm for his service in Vietnam. Following Vietnam, Larry served in various command and staff positions at Fort Lee (now Fort Gregg-Adams), Virginia, and with the 1st Armored Division in Germany. Upon his separation from the service, Larry worked with the Internal Revenue Service and Wells Fargo as a forensic accountant. He currently resides in Richmond with Vera, his spouse of 45 years, and has two children and three grandchildren.
