Hill of Heroes: Flag Installation
The Virginia War Memorial will once again transform into a powerful display of remembrance as more than 12,000 American flags are installed across its hillside. Our Hill of Heroes will be on display from June 26, 2026 through the morning of July 10, 2026. The Virginia War Memorial Foundation is proud to support this Memorial Tribute.
The flags are placed to honor and remember the nearly 12,000 Virginia men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service from World War II to present day, and whose names are inscribed on the Memorial’s Shrine of Memory.
There are three different opportunities to assist us with this exhibit:
Flag Installation – Friday, June 26, 2026 @ 8:00 am: We are seeking volunteers to assist in the installation of the 12,000 flags. There will be a brief program at 8am followed by the installation of the flags. The installation typically takes approximately two hours, depending on weather conditions and the number of participants.
Flag Retrieval – Friday, July 10, 2026 @ 8:00 am: Volunteers are needed to assist in the removal of the flags. This task entails removing the flags, cleaning the wooden posts, removing damaged flags and placing the flags in the Virginia War Memorial lower parking deck. This extra step allows the flags and wooden posts to dry out over the weekend before packaging happens. The removal typically takes 2-3 hours, depending on weather conditions, the number of participants and the condition of the flag sticks.
Flag Bundle/Boxing – Monday, July 13, 2026 @ 8:00 am: Volunteers are needed to help with the bundling and boxing of the 12,000 flags to be used next year. This will be conducted in our parking deck on the lowest level and should take between 2-3 hours, depending on the number of participants.
These different events happen rain or shine. Volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, apply sunscreen, and bring gloves if possible. There is free parking in our parking deck for each of these days.
