On the night of October 30, 1990, the USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2), an amphibious assault ship in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield, suffered a catastrophic boiler room explosion that killed 10 sailors. Dr. Clay Mountcastle, Director of the Virginia War Memorial, will investigate the facts of what occurred on the night of October 30, 1990, and highlight other catastrophes in the Persian Gulf of similar magnitude.
