This summer, the Virginia War Memorial is proud to host 2 three-day Teacher Institutes and 1 single-day Institute.
All of the Virginia War Memorial’s teacher programs are FREE, and open to all educators. Lunches are provided for all participants at in-person programs. Teachers are eligible to receive recertification points for each of these programs.

Connecting Students to History: A Workshop on Research, Writing, and Photography

9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This fantastic teacher workshop will focus on research strategies and skills for students of all ages. Virginia War Memorial Director of Education Jim Triesler and Archivist Sylvia Marshall will be joined by award-winning Author Karen Chase, and Curriculum Coordinator Dustin Axe of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston. They will provide strategies and resources for teachers and students who wish to engage in the research process and make lasting connections to history. We will focus on archival materials and research, teaching with primary sources, photo analysis, genealogical skills, and research methods beyond the archives. This workshop is designed for history and English teachers, and anyone who loves learning about the past.
Peace With Honor: An In-Depth Look at the War in Vietnam

January 23, 1973, President Richard Nixon broadcast the following words to the nation, “Good evening. I have asked for this radio and television time tonight for the purpose of announcing that we today have concluded an agreement to end the war and bring peace with honor in Vietnam and in Southeast Asia.” Fifty years have passed since American soldiers left Vietnam. During this three-day program, experts, Vietnam veterans, and members of Richmond’s Vietnamese Community will share their experiences from this controversial period of American History. This topic is very relevant as talk of potential war in Asia is being broadcast on the news once again.

Did you know that the Carillon in Byrd Park is Virginia’s War Memorial for World War I? Join us for a three-day look at “the Great War,” the impact that it had on the lives of Virginians, and how the Carillon will soon transform into Virginia’s museum showcasing World War I. Historians will share their knowledge on fascinating topics related to World War I – military equipment, immigration, letters, sports, politics, and the war’s impact on the lives of average Americans. Teachers will receive a variety of resources for use in the classroom.
