Staff Sergeant Monaghan flew 33 combat missions over occupied Europe as a right waist gunner before being killed when his aircraft collided with another B-24 while elements of the 392nd Bomb Group were joining up for a mission to Hitzocker, Germany to bomb an underground oil storage depot. Twenty bombers were committed to the mission. He was buried at Cambridge, England in the Cambridge American Cemetery, with full military honors. He was later re interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
