Chief Fire Controlman Flanders served aboard the USS Ingraham (DD-694) when the ship came under air attack by Japanese kamikazes. Four enemy planes surrounded the Ingraham when a fifth plane crashed into the the ship’s waterline and a bomb exploded in the generator room, killing 15 crew members.
He is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, New York.
