Staff Sergeant Dowdy joined the Virginia National Guard in 1941, serving with the 176th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. He served with the Presidential Honor Guard for President Roosevelt and trained troops at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was killed on August 10, 1944 in Mortain, France, with the heroes of Hill 314 repelling the first large German counterattack after Normandy.
