Lieutenant Hamner served aboard the USS Howorth (DD-592). The destroyer was attacked by kamikazes during the assault on Okinawa. He and six other men were killed when one of the enemy planes crashed into the anti-aircraft gun on the superstructure.

He is a 1932 graduate of E. C. Glass High School and a 1942 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy.

He was employed by Harvard University as a an instructor in the Naval Training School.

He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
