First Lieutenant Miller served with A Company,  1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division and was killed in action on February 16, 1969 in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam. He threw himself on an enemy grenade to save his patrol, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

He is buried in Alleghany Memorial Park, Alleghany County, Virginia.
