Yeoman Third Class Newton served aboard the USS Reuben James DD-245 when it was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-552 while escorting Convoy HX-156. Sadly, 116 sailors perished and only 44 survived.
He is buried in Daleville Cemetery, Botetourt County, Virginia.
