Second Lieutenant Cowherd served with C Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor, 1st Armor Division, Friedberg, Germany. He was killed in action in Karbala, Iraq on May 16, 2004, by a sniper and rocket propelled grenade fire.
He was a graduate of Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill, Virginia and a 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
