Virginia War Memorial Livestream – “Ever Ready to March:” Black Soldiers in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars
In 1898, the United States fought a global war in the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Called upon to fight, the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments consisted primarily of Black soldiers in a segregated military. The Richmond Planet, an African American newspaper founded in 1882 and edited by John Mitchell, Jr., told the story of the men who served in that global conflict. Men who, according to the newspaper, “were ever ready to march to the front to defend the flag and die for their country.” Join VWM Director of Education Jim Triesler as he shares their story from the pages of the Richmond Planet.
